Rav Dovid Yosef, Rosh Yeshivas Yechaveh Da’as and son of Chacham Ovadia Yosef, alongside his brother, current Sefardic Chief Rabbi Rav Yitzchok Yosef, issued a call to the chareidi community to forgo street celebrations during the upcoming Purim amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
“We find ourselves amidst a war, a challenging battle against our adversaries. Daily, we receive distressing updates about fallen soldiers. The circumstances are undeniably difficult. I believe it’s crucial for everyone to observe Purim within their homes, fulfilling its commandments. However, regarding public revelries, caution must be exercised to avoid displaying jubilation and dancing in the streets. We must tread carefully,” Rav Yosef emphasized.
Highlighting the perception of the broader community, Rabbi Yosef remarked, “When the secular world witnesses religious individuals celebrating and appearing joyous on Purim as if the nation’s suffering hasn’t affected them, it reflects poorly. Such actions tarnish the sanctity of G-d’s name.”
“I urge the heads of yeshivas, the rabbis, and the entire community to take every measure to ensure Purim celebrations this year maintain a subdued tone. Let us refrain from public festivities. Instead, let each family observe the holiday within the confines of their home, enjoying the Purim feast and exchanging Mishloach Manos with relatives and friends. However, let us not project an image as if the ongoing events have no bearing on us. We are integral members of society, experiencing the anguish inflicted upon our soldiers and captives,” Rav Yosef added.
“We must recognize that God stands by us in our distress. It is a collective tribulation; we are part of the people of Tzion. Thus, it would be inconceivable to rejoice and celebrate as though nothing has occurred. With divine assistance, may everyone grasp the gravity of the situation, enabling us to fulfill the mitzvos of Purim while remaining mindful of the immense challenges facing the Jewish people,” Rav Yosef concluded.
