It is with great sadness that Matzav.com reports the petirah of Rav Avrohom Tzvi Shmulevitz zt”l, one of the great Torah giants of Eretz Yisroel. He was 77.
Rav Shmulevitz was born in Yerushalayim on the 29th of Nissan in 1947, the second son of his father, Rav Chaim Leib Shmulevitz, rosh yeshiva of Mir, and his mother, Mrs. Chana Miriam, a daughter of Rav Leizer Yudel Finkel, rosh yeshiva of Mir.
Rav Shmulevitz was also a grandson of Rav Yosef Yoizel Horowitz, the Alter of Novardok, as his paternal grandmother was the Alter’s daughter, and on his mother’s side he was a grandson of Rav Nosson Tzvi Finkel, the Alter of Slabodka.
In his youth, he studied at the Chevron Yeshiva, where he learned from the rosh yeshiva, Rav Yechezkel Sarna, and Rav Avrohom Moshe Chevroni.
While studying at the Chevron Yeshiva in the Geula neighborhood of Yerushalayim, he became very close to the Bais Yisroel of Gur and formed a special kesher with him.
Upon reaching marriageable age, he married the daughter of Rav Yehuda Leib Nekritz and the granddaughter of Rav Avrohom Jofen, son-in-law of the Alter of Novardok.
After his marriage, he learned at the Mir Yeshiva and soon began giving shiurim. He was an extraordinary talmid chochom and a world-class lamdan, though his greatness in Torah was often hidden by his humility. Besides his brilliance in Torah, he was distinguished by his exceptional middos tovos. He behaved with immense simplicity and was beloved by all who met him.
His brother, Rav Refoel Shmulevitz, one of the roshei yeshiva of the Mir Yeshiva in Yerushalayim, passed away several years ago. His brother, Rav Meir Shmulevitz, serves as the av bais din of the Bais Din L’Dinei Mamonos associated with the Yerushalayim Religious Council and head of the Encyclopedia Talmudis project.
Rav Shmulevitz leaves behind 14 children and many grandchildren. His eldest son, Rav Yisroel Yaakov Shmulevitz, is the rosh yeshiva of Yeshiva Migdal Oz in Givat Ze’ev.
The levayah will take place at 5:30 p.m. at Yeshivas Mir Yerushalayim in the Bais Yisroel neighborhood of Yerushalayim, followed by kevurah on Har Hamenuchos.
Yehi zichro boruch.
