Senator Ted Cruz, a Republican from Texas, accused the Biden administration of providing financial support to Hamas terrorists. On Thursday, Cruz shared a report from The Daily Caller on social media, which claimed that over $1.3 billion in taxpayer dollars under President Joe Biden’s leadership went to groups associated with terrorism.
Cruz posted on X, stating, “USAID secretly poured uncountable hundreds of millions of dollars toward Hamas, including tens of millions of cash they could never account for. Throughout the Biden admin, they knew the money they were pouring into Gaza would benefit Hamas. They did it anyway.”
The Trump administration and Elon Musk, who leads President Donald Trump’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), have been particularly critical of USAID, taking an unprecedented stance against the federal government and its various programs.
On Monday, the White House issued a statement titled “At USAID, Waste and Abuse Runs Deep.” It highlighted what it described as “pet projects of entrenched bureaucrats,” including millions allocated to EcoHealth Alliance, which conducted research at the Chinese Wuhan lab, from where the coronavirus is believed to have originated. Additionally, it noted that hundreds of millions of dollars were directed toward “irrigation canals, farming equipment, and even fertilizer used to support the unprecedented poppy cultivation and heroin production in Afghanistan,” ultimately benefiting the Taliban.
According to The Daily Caller, federal oversight reports and other documents suggest that Biden’s aid initiatives directed funds toward a network of terrorist organizations in the Muslim world. National security experts urged that the Trump administration must take steps to halt this financial flow.
“We should not be putting money into any country or areas where a terrorist group remains in control,” said Bill Roggio, a senior fellow at the Foundation for Defense of Democracies.
He added, “Aid, like money, is fungible. It winds up propping up these groups. It allows them to use … whatever money they have to invest into their terrorist activities.”
