Sirens rang out in central Israel Thursday afternoon after rockets were fired from Gaza.
This marked the first rocket launch from Gaza since the initial phase of the ceasefire agreement between Israel and the Hamas terror group came to an end on March 1. Although Israel had waited for Hamas to agree to extend the truce, fighting resumed earlier this week after Hamas demanded a full Israeli military withdrawal from Gaza as a precondition for the release of hostages.
“The IAF successfully intercepted one projectile and two additional projectiles fell in an open area,” confirmed the IDF. “Following the sirens that sounded a short while ago in the areas of Gush Dan and HaShfela, three projectiles were identified crossing from southern Gaza into Israeli territory.”
Police responded to several locations in Rishon Lezion after fragments of a rocket were found. Fortunately, there were no injuries reported.
However, in Givatayim, a 50-year-old man sustained injuries while rushing for cover. As he was entering the bomb shelter, his finger got caught in the door and was severed. He was taken to Sheba Tel Hashomer hospital with injuries described as light to moderate.
Hamas claimed responsibility for the rocket fire, stating, “We fired M-90 rockets towards Tel Aviv, in response to the Zionist acts of massacre.” The rockets were launched from Khan Yunis in southern Gaza.
In related news, sirens were activated earlier Thursday morning in central Israel, the Shfela area, and parts of Jerusalem and its surroundings after a missile was fired from Yemen. According to the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit, the missile was intercepted by the Israeli Air Force before it could reach Israeli airspace. Sirens were sounded as part of standard protocol.
Magen David Adom (MDA) reported no significant impacts or injuries, though its medics treated around 13 people who were hurt while seeking shelter, along with three people suffering from anxiety.
