Elon Musk, the billionaire and close ally of President Donald Trump, is scheduled to receive a briefing from the Pentagon today regarding the US military’s strategy in the event of a potential war with China, according to a report from the New York Times on Thursday, citing US officials.
Being granted access to the highly classified military plan would significantly increase Musk’s influence as a Trump adviser, particularly in light of his leadership in efforts to reduce US government expenditure.
This move would also raise further concerns regarding possible conflicts of interest for Musk, given his leadership roles at both Tesla and SpaceX, two companies with business dealings in China and with the Pentagon.
The military’s briefing on the China conflict plan consists of 20 to 30 slides detailing the United States’ strategy for engaging in such a war, the New York Times reported.
The Pentagon confirmed that Musk will indeed visit on Friday, though no additional information was provided. “The Defense Department is excited to welcome Elon Musk to the Pentagon on Friday. He was invited by Secretary (Pete) Hegseth and is just visiting,” a spokesperson for the Pentagon stated.
Relations between Washington and Beijing have been strained for years, with disagreements over a range of issues including technology access, trade tariffs, cybersecurity, TikTok, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights, and the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic.
