[COMMUNICATED]

Many are familiar with a seemingly harmless meme that makes the rounds on Whatsapp each year: “Imagine if your phone was about to die, and then it lasted 8 days,” it says, setting up the joke. “Now you understand Chanukah.”

As those with a deeper understanding of Jewish history know, however, Chanukah is about much, much more than a small amount of oil lasting for longer than expected. At its heart the Chanukah story is about Torah, and the preservation of its mitzvos against all odds and in the face of persecution. Though we all rightly enjoy fried foods and beautiful views this week, the best way to celebrate Chanukah is to attach oneself to the mitzvos of the Torah. To see how to do that best, we look to the gedolim.

Many readers are familiar with the yearly Chanukah traditions of Rav Chaim Kanievsky. Surrounded by onlookers, the Rav recites the bracha and lights a simple yet beautiful menorah outside of his Bnei Brak home. Once the candles are lit, he prays for those who donate to local reputable charity organization Kupat Ha’Ir, then puts a coin into the pushka himself. It is an important reminder of the values at the very core of this joyous holiday.

This year, donating to Kupat Ha’Ir’s Chanukah charity campaign comes with multiple benefits: Brachos from Rav Kanievsky for ‘everything good,’ as well as ‘banim talmidei chachamim,’ being included on the Rav’s nightly Chanukah prayer list, and also being added to the list for a massive prayer event at the Kosel. The Kosel gathering will be run by emissaries sent by Kupat Ha’Ir – emissaries will pray 271 times for each individual donor, by name. As the campaign page points out, even these spectacular opportunities pale in comparison to the merits achieved by donating one’s hard earned money to help needy families.

As you cozily gather with loved ones tonight, about to enjoy a bite of your favorite treat, think of those who live without heat and groceries, and give what you can.
