Right-wing activist Yair Ansbacher took to the Kosel on Thursday, posting signs that read, “Mi LaShem eilai – Whoever is for G-d follow me!” and displayed symbols representing the twelve shevatim.
According to Ansbacher, the purpose behind the signs was to uplift the spirits of the Jewish people amidst the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas.
Rav Shmuel Rabinowitz, the rov of the Kosel and other mekomos hakedoshim, voiced a “painful protest” against what he called the desecration of the sacred site. He condemned the unprecedented actions of a Jew who, according to him, violated Jewish halacha by climbing the holy stones and performing acts in contradiction to halacha, both on the Har Habayis and by placing the signs on the Kosel.
“These acts, like other acts which were done recently, are in contradiction to halacha and rulings by the Chief Rabbinate,” Rav Rabinowitz said.
Attorney Doniel Shimshilashvili, representing Ansbacher, defended his client, stating, “This is an act [by someone] who aimed to raise the morale of the Jewish nation at this difficult time, and found himself detained at the police station. My client’s pain is understandable, and he can be released at the scene after clarification.”
