President Donald Trump clarified on Wednesday, ahead of his discussions with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin at the White House, that there would be no forced removals from Gaza.
“No one is expelling anyone from Gaza,” Trump affirmed while standing next to Martin.
His statement followed a proposal he had floated in February, which suggested relocating Gaza’s population in order to allow the United States to assume control of the territory and oversee its redevelopment.
Israeli Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, who was present at the White House when the idea was first introduced, expressed his approval of Trump’s plan.
Prior to his meeting with Trump, Martin addressed the situation in Gaza, emphasizing the urgent necessity of increasing humanitarian aid to the area.
In addition to advocating for more assistance, Martin urged for an immediate ceasefire and demanded the release of the remaining hostages who have been held captive by Hamas since the October 7 attacks in 2023.
Israel’s diplomatic presence in Ireland was shut down in December, with officials attributing the decision to what they described as the country’s “anti-Israel policies.”
This move came shortly after Ireland publicly backed South Africa’s legal case against Israel at the International Court of Justice, where Israel faced allegations of genocide.
“The actions and antisemitic rhetoric used by Ireland against Israel are rooted in the delegitimization and demonization of the Jewish state, along with double standards. Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel,” stated Israeli Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar when announcing the embassy’s closure.
Earlier in May, Ireland had made clear its intent to formally recognize a Palestinian state.
