A lucky Mega Millions player in California became significantly wealthier on Saturday after winning an estimated $1.3 billion, the fifth-largest prize in the game’s history. This victory came after matching all six numbers drawn just hours earlier.
The winning ticket, which correctly selected the numbers 3, 7, 37, 49, and 55, along with the gold Mega Ball 6, was purchased in Cottonwood, California, roughly 200 miles north of San Francisco, according to a statement from Mega Millions.
Joshua Johnston, the lead director for the Mega Millions Consortium, expressed excitement about the win, stating, “What an amazing present this holiday season! At an incredibly special time of year, this is both an incredibly special moment for our winner.”
The jackpot grew to $1.269 billion after no one correctly predicted all six numbers in the past 30 draws. The odds of winning the Mega Millions jackpot stand at 1 in 302,575,350.
The largest lottery prize in U.S. history was a $2.04 billion Powerball jackpot won by a single ticket holder in California in November 2022.
