During a speech for International Water Day, Mahmoud Abbas, the Palestinian Authority chairman, made pointed remarks accusing Israel of being responsible for “a crime of ongoing mass extermination for over a year and a half.”
Abbas argued that Israel’s actions are causing a “slow death” to the Palestinian Arab population, especially in Gaza.
He went on to accuse Israel of using what he referred to as “an additional weapon”—cutting off basic services like water and blocking humanitarian aid. “The occupation seeks to expel our people,” Abbas stated, “and to implement illegal expansion plans aimed at eliminating the Palestinian issue.”
The PA leader drew parallels between Israel’s current policies in Gaza and the West Bank and the traumatic events of 1948 and 1967, the “Nakba” and “the tragedy.” He emphasized that “the entire world now understands that the occupation’s goal is expulsion and the loss of rights—not security.”
Abbas urged the international community to take “practical and urgent steps” to stop the ongoing suffering of Gaza’s civilians and to prevent the destruction of essential infrastructure, especially the water supply.
