A Jeju Air flight carrying 181 passengers from Thailand to South Korea tragically crashed upon its arrival, crashing into a barrier and igniting in flames. The crash left all but two people presumed dead.
Authorities have indicated that a bird strike, along with challenging weather conditions, were likely factors in the crash, which caused passengers to be thrown from the plane and left the aircraft “almost completely destroyed,” according to officials from the fire department.
Footage captured the Jeju Air plane, arriving from Bangkok, landing on its underside at Muan International Airport. The plane skidded off the runway, emitting smoke from its engines, before crashing into a wall and erupting in flames.
“Passengers were ejected from the aircraft after the collision with the wall, offering little hope for survival,” a local fire official stated in a briefing with the families, as shared by a fire brigade statement.
“The plane is nearly destroyed, and identifying the victims has been challenging. It is taking time to locate and recover the remains,” the official continued.
By mid-afternoon, only two survivors, both flight attendants, had been rescued, and 120 deaths were confirmed, according to the fire department’s statement.
