A union leader recently shared an incident where Vice President Kamala Harris walked out of a meeting on the campaign trail, dismissively telling him she didn’t require his support because she would “win with you or without you,” just prior to her significant defeat by Donald Trump.
Teamsters President Sean O’Brien recounted this encounter on “The Tucker Carlson Show” on Monday, discussing his union’s unprecedented decision to withhold an endorsement for the presidential race for the first time in almost three decades.
O’Brien explained that Harris had finally agreed to meet with the Teamsters for a roundtable discussion after President Biden withdrew from the race, but she only responded to a small portion of their 16 questions. Other candidates, including Trump, provided answers to all of them.
“On the fourth question, one of her operatives or one of her staff slips a note in front of me — ‘This will be the last question.’ And it was 20 minutes earlier than the time it was going to end,” O’Brien told Carlson.
“And her declaration of the way out was, ‘I’m going to win with you or without you,’” he recalled.
Carlson responded, “Damn. I thought I was arrogant. That’s really arrogant.”
O’Brien mentioned that he reached out to Biden’s former Secretary of Labor, Marty Walsh, to discuss Harris.
“Let me ask you a question, Marty. Excuse my French. Who does this f–king lady think she is?” he remembered asking Walsh, who now heads the NHL Players’ Association.
The union leader also noted his concerns about Biden’s decline before the latter ended his reelection campaign, describing it as “kinda looked like elderly abuse” given the state of Biden’s health and energy.
“We had Biden in there and you could just clearly tell he was not the man he was. It was kinda sad,” O’Brien said, adding that Biden had been a strong president for workers.
Weeks before the election, O’Brien announced that the Teamsters would break from tradition and not endorse a candidate for the first time since 1996, despite a long history of support for Democratic candidates.
In fact, the union’s 1.3 million members overwhelmingly backed Trump over Harris, with 59.6% supporting the former president compared to 34% for Harris.
Before Biden dropped out, he had held a steady lead of 44.3% to Trump’s 36.3%.
The Teamsters had supported the Biden-Harris ticket in 2020 and had endorsed Hillary Clinton over Trump in 2016.
