Three people who have been accused of damaging Tesla vehicles and charging stations now face up to two decades in prison for “domestic terrorism,” as announced by US Attorney General Pam Bondi on Thursday.
“The days of committing crimes without consequence have ended,” Bondi remarked in her statement.
“Let this be a warning: if you join this wave of domestic terrorism against Tesla properties, the Department of Justice will put you behind bars,” she further warned.
The accused individuals are said to have used powerful weapons and explosives to destroy assets belonging to Tesla, the electric vehicle company founded by Elon Musk.
One of the suspects is reportedly carrying a silenced AR-15 rifle while throwing eight Molotov cocktails at a Tesla dealership in Oregon. Another is accused of attempting to set fire to Tesla cars with similar explosives in Loveland, Colorado.
The third individual is said to have vandalized charging stations with offensive anti-Trump messages and then set them ablaze using Molotov cocktails, according to the US Department of Justice.
All three face a minimum sentence of five years in prison if convicted, though the charges could lead to up to 20 years behind bars.
Bondi did not release the names of the accused or disclose the exact charges they face.
