Today, Iran’s supreme leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, issued a stern warning to the United States, stating that any challenge to Tehran would result in a “hard slap.” This came after President Donald Trump raised the possibility of military action against Iran.
In his live speech for Nowruz, the Persian New Year, Khamenei told viewers, “The Americans should know threats will get them nowhere when confronting Iran.” He went on to assert, “Americans and others should know that if they do anything malign to the Iranian nation, they will get a hard slap.”
This statement reflects Iran’s long-standing antagonism toward U.S. involvement in the region, which frequently includes threats aimed at U.S. interests and Israel. These threats have been a recurring feature of Iranian rhetoric.
Earlier this month, Trump revealed that he had sent a letter to Khamenei, calling for negotiations on Iran’s nuclear program and warning of possible military action if Iran refuses to engage in talks.
Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi responded to Trump’s letter by labeling it “more of a threat,” though he also acknowledged that it could present some opportunities. Araghchi indicated that Tehran was considering its reply, which is expected in the coming days.
Khamenei has previously rejected Trump’s calls for dialogue, accusing the U.S. president of trying to manipulate global perception by framing the U.S. as eager for negotiations while portraying Iran as the reluctant party. Since his second term began in January, Trump has reactivated his “maximum pressure” strategy against Tehran.
