On Monday, MK Avi Maoz (Noam) announced that he would step down from his role as Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Office.
In a scathing letter addressed to Prime Minister Bibi Netanyahu, Maoz accused the so-called “deep state” of taking control of the Education and Justice Ministries, while also claiming that the coalition agreement he had signed had been breached.
Maoz, who campaigned on a platform emphasizing strict Orthodox Jewish values, opposing LGBT rights and secular influences, and rejecting religious pluralism and progressive social reforms, was assigned responsibility for overseeing external programs in the Education Ministry as part of the coalition deal. He asserts that “pressure from the deep state on the Ministry of Education and Education Minister” led to the violation of the agreement. Moreover, he mentioned that an alternative proposal to establish transparency for parents regarding external programs had failed to materialize.
In addition, Maoz criticized the government’s failure to meet the terms of the coalition agreement, which stipulated that funding for the “Torani” (ultra-religious) Zionist education system would be on par with the general education system. He also raised alarms about unheeded warnings to the Prime Minister regarding “dangerous processes” within the Shin Bet, where discussions allegedly took place about a plan to “protect the foundations of democracy” from the government and Knesset.
“When the Cabinet Secretary and the Education Minister informed me that this clause will also not be fulfilled and in fact, nearly none of the clauses from the coalition agreement were fulfilled, I will continue to fight with all my strength for the education of all of Israel’s children, for more Judaism, more tradition, and more nationalism and Zionism, as a regular member of Israel’s Knesset,” Maoz wrote.
He added that the Knesset would work toward advancing “a war against the deep state in the Education Ministry.”
After announcing his resignation, Maoz stated, “Already during the coalition negotiations I spoke with the Prime Minister about how deep the deep state has spread, in all institutions in general and particularly in the Education Ministry. Unfortunately, almost all the tools that they promised to give me were not met. I will continue to work to strengthen the country’s Jewish identity as a regular member of the Knesset.”
