Republican Senator Bernie Moreno of Ohio took sharp aim at Senator Bernie Sanders on Thursday, condemning him for parroting what he described as Hamas talking points. The rebuke followed Sanders’ controversial claims accusing Israel of committing ethnic cleansing and using starvation tactics in its military campaign.
Speaking from the Senate floor, Sanders unleashed a fiery speech in which he alleged that the Israeli government was engaging in war crimes in Gaza. He went further, asserting that the United States bore responsibility for enabling those actions and even blamed President Donald Trump for “actively encouraging the ethnic cleansing of over two million people.”
Moreno, who only recently joined the Senate, did not hold back in his rebuttal. Standing to respond directly after Sanders’ comments, he declared, “What you just heard… could be summarized as the absolute propaganda of Hamas.” He continued, “It’s a disgrace, and we should not ever forget that Israel is fighting the war that we would otherwise fight.”
He was unequivocal in his support for Israel, stating, “Hamas is the enemy,” and reminding the chamber that Israel remains “our greatest ally.”
Taking issue with Sanders’ portrayal of the conflict, Moreno said the depiction was dangerously skewed and failed to acknowledge the atrocities committed by Hamas. Referencing the brutal terror assault of October 7, 2023, Moreno said, “They savagely murdered children, raped women, took hundreds of hostages, and killed more Jews than at any time since the Holocaust.”
“This war was started by Hamas,” Moreno emphasized. “It could end today by Hamas if they release every last hostage, including an American citizen.”
