CLAIM: Former President Bill Clinton appeared on The Late Show With Stephen Colbert on Tuesday, where he alleged that President-elect Donald Trump had made promises to Christian voters — whom he referred to as “Christian nationalists” — claiming that if they helped him regain the presidency, he would manipulate future elections.
Clinton stated: “Not long before the election, President Trump did an interview with a conservative radio station and said that his Christian nationalists had to get out and vote this time but if they did and he won they would never have to vote again because he’d have it rigged so they wouldn’t have to worry.”
VERDICT: The claim is untrue. Trump has never said he would tamper with future elections, nor has he implied any intention to do so.
Clinton appeared to misinterpret or conflate various events. He suggested that Trump made the comment during a radio interview, but he likely referred to a speech Trump delivered in July at the Turning Point Action’s Believers’ Summit in West Palm Beach, Florida.
In that speech, Trump addressed concerns about election integrity. He urged Christian voters to show up in significant numbers to secure his return to the presidency, which would allow him to implement voter ID laws and other measures aimed at ensuring the integrity of elections moving forward.
During the speech, Trump remarked: “Four years, it will be fixed, it will be fine. You won’t have to vote anymore. In four years, you won’t have to vote again.”
Trump’s statement was widely misinterpreted by those on the left, including The Atlantic, to suggest he planned to undermine or abolish future elections. This misrepresentation quickly gained traction across social media and mainstream media outlets.
Despite the inaccuracy of Clinton’s claim, host Stephen Colbert made no attempt to correct or challenge him during the interview.
On the same program, Clinton painted Democrats as champions of peaceful transitions of power after presidential elections. However, he failed to acknowledge his own wife’s involvement in propagating the Russia collusion narrative, which sought to delegitimize the results of the 2016 election by falsely framing Trump as a Russian operative.
In a 2019 interview on CBS’ Sunday Morning, Hillary Clinton referred to Trump as an “illegitimate president” and stated: “I know that he knows that this [the 2016 election] wasn’t on the level.”
Nonetheless, as reported by Breitbart News, the Durham investigation eventually cleared Trump of allegations of collusion with Russia. Meanwhile, Hillary Clinton has faced no accountability for her role in perpetuating the unfounded conspiracy.
