Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) expressed his disappointment on ABC’s “This Week” on Sunday, stating that when the Democratic Party held power, they “did virtually nothing for working people.”
Here’s a part of the transcript:
KARL: With about 60 days having passed in the second Trump presidency, how would you evaluate the Democratic Party’s reaction?
SANDERS: Well, let me take you back even further, to a time before Trump was elected. I find it disheartening that, when the Democrats were in control of the Senate, they failed to take meaningful action for working-class Americans. I have to be honest about that. As an Independent, I am part of the Democratic Caucus, but I’m not going to pretend that things were different.
KARL: Understood.
SANDERS: Since then, do I believe the Democrats have been successful in mobilizing the American public to oppose Trump’s agenda and halt his drive toward oligarchy and authoritarianism? No, I don’t.
KARL: Is there anything you think Trump has done well?
SANDERS: Yes. For instance, his efforts to tackle fentanyl trafficking and strengthen border security. Look, no one believes that illegal immigration is acceptable. I personally think we need a thorough immigration reform. But, it’s not right for people to cross the border illegally. So, our focus needs to shift to comprehensive immigration reform. Now, regarding Trump’s plan—I’m not sure what his latest proposal is—he wants to deport 20 million undocumented individuals. If that happens, the country would be severely harmed. Let me explain why: Trump’s billionaire allies won’t be the ones harvesting crops in California or working in meatpacking plants. Those are the jobs being done by undocumented workers. Thus, we need a wide range of solutions, including guest worker programs, but above all, comprehensive immigration reform.
