President Joe Biden has announced on Friday afternoon that Israel and the Hamas terror group have agreed on a framework for a ceasefire and hostage release deal.
Biden wrote on X: “Six weeks ago I laid out a comprehensive framework for how to achieve a ceasefire and bring the hostages home,”
“There is still work to do and these are complex issues, but that framework is now agreed to by both Israel and Hamas. My team is making progress and I’m determined to get this done.”
Just yesterday, US US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan said that there were “miles to go on a ceasefire”, although did say some progress had been made.
An earlier report suggested that Israel and Hamas agreed that the terror group would not be in charge of Gaza. Instead, an “interim government”, made up of PA affiliated Gazans, without ties to Hamas, who Israel has approved.
The exact details of the plan have yet to be released.
Neither Israel or Hamas immediately confirmed President Biden’s announcement.
Politically, a ceasefire deal could be a desperately needed win for Biden, who is facing widespread questions about his age and mental abilities.
