Yamil Santoro, a member of Buenos Aires’ municipal legislature, is pushing for a street currently named after Palestine to be renamed in honor of the Bibas family instead. He recently introduced a bill proposing that the street, Estado de Palestina (State of Palestine), located in the city’s Almagro neighborhood, be renamed to Familia Bibas. This would commemorate Shiri Silberman Bibas and her two sons, Ariel and Kfir Bibas, who were tragically abducted on October 7, 2023, and murdered while in captivity. Their bodies were returned on Thursday and over the weekend.
Shiri and her children held dual citizenship, both in Israel and Argentina.
One significant challenge to the proposed name change stems from an existing law passed in October 1998, which mandates that street names cannot be changed to honor a person until at least ten years have passed since their death.
Santoro, however, told La Nacion that the law could potentially be bypassed by renaming the street after the entire family. He also mentioned that they have not yet approached the Bibas family about the proposal. “We will wait for a reasonable amount of time to pass before reaching out to talk,” he said.
The intersection of Estado de Palestina and Estado de Israel is a well-known location, attracting curious onlookers every day.
