As was widely reported, Camp Malka, a popular summer destination for many young girls, faced significant challenges this year that disrupted the plans of numerous campers. The camp, located on a sprawling 120-acre campus in Scotland, was unable to open as scheduled, leaving many parents and campers in a difficult situation.
Rabbi Shmuel Hiller, the camp owner, addressed the issue in a heartfelt letter to parents and campers.
“I write this letter with a heavy heart and intense feelings of remorse,” Rabbi Hiller began.
He detailed the initial excitement and high expectations set for the new campus, which boasted amenities such as two gyms, a 750-seat auditorium, bowling alleys, and a large outdoor amphitheater.
Despite the extensive preparations, including what Rabbi Hiller described as “the herculean efforts of our contractor and everyone else involved,” the camp was not ready in time. “For this, I accept personal responsibility,” he stated, acknowledging the profound disappointment and disruption caused to the families.
The situation has had financial implications as well. Many parents had paid camp fees in advance, expecting their daughters to enjoy a summer full of activities and new experiences. Rabbi Hiller addressed this concern directly, assuring families that they would be reimbursed. “Rest assured that I am taking full responsibility to ensure that everyone is reimbursed accordingly,” he wrote, asking for patience and understanding as the camp works through the logistics of issuing refunds.
Rabbi Hiller expressed his gratitude for the supportive messages he has received. “I would like to thank the many parents who have called, emailed, and texted me with words of pain, encouragement, and understanding,” he said. “Your support means the world to me during this challenging time.”
Looking forward, Camp Malka is committed to overcoming this setback and ensuring that future summers meet the high standards parents and campers have come to expect. Rabbi Hiller emphasized the camp’s dedication to turning this experience into a learning opportunity, with a focus on preventing similar issues in the future.
As the camp works to reimburse families and rebuild trust, the hope is that next summer will see Camp Malka return stronger and more prepared than ever, ready to provide an exceptional experience for all its campers.
