President Donald Trump currently holds a 50% approval rating, with an identical 50% disapproval rate, according to a new CBS News poll released on Sunday.
This marks a slight decline from the previous month, down by one percentage point, and places his approval a few points below where it stood when he resumed office two months ago.
Still, this level of support is higher than anything he achieved during his first term in office, as shown in the poll’s historical comparison.
These numbers come in the wake of a controversial week dominated by headlines about Trump administration officials using the Signal app to discuss American military strategy — a move that 76% of respondents believe was an inappropriate use of the messaging platform.
Trump’s approval on some key issues remains underwater. On inflation, 56% of Americans disapprove of how he’s managing the situation, keeping him in negative territory on that front. His overall economic approval has also slipped, with 52% now disapproving — a reversal from a positive rating just a month prior.
In contrast, immigration is one area where the former president receives strong marks, with 53% of those polled approving of his handling of the issue, and 58% supporting his policy of deporting individuals residing in the U.S. unlawfully.
Public opinion on Trump’s initiative to shrink the federal workforce is evenly split, with half of Americans supporting the move and the other half opposed.
Among those who disapprove of the downsizing effort, a common concern is that it could affect critical government services and programs. That includes 62% of independent voters, who fear these cuts could impact areas they care about most.
