A man identified by law enforcement as a Colorado-based Army veteran named Matthew Livelsberger was behind the wheel of the Tesla Cybertruck that erupted near a Las Vegas, Nevada hotel, according to officials.
He is reportedly linked to the same military installation as Shamsud-Din Jabbar—according to a source—the individual accused of deliberately driving into a group of people in New Orleans, resulting in 15 deaths.
One person lost their life, and seven more were hurt when the explosion took place at the entrance of the Las Vegas Trump International Hotel on Wednesday morning.
Authorities have determined the incident was deliberate. Once the fire was put out, Sheriff Kevin McMahill of the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department noted that gas canisters, camping fuel, and firework mortars were discovered in the truck’s bed.
However, investigators have yet to locate any tools or mechanisms that might have triggered the blast, and they remain uncertain about the cause of ignition.
The Cybertruck had been rented in Colorado Springs via the Turo carsharing platform.
“We are heartbroken by the violence perpetrated in New Orleans and Las Vegas, and our prayers are with the victims and families,” a Turo spokesperson said in a statement. “We are actively partnering with law enforcement authorities as they investigate both incidents. We do not believe that either renter involved in the Las Vegas and New Orleans attacks had a criminal background that would have identified them as a security threat.”
FBI Acting Special Agent-In-Charge Jeremy Schwartz stated that the car explosion was an isolated event and that there is no danger to the general public.
