Deputy Speaker of the Knesset MK Evgeny Sova (Yisrael Beiteinu) has outlined the reasons behind his and his party’s push for a comprehensive conscription law, which would also encompass the chareidi community.
Sova strongly criticized the current law, calling it “a draft evasion law” that he believes undermines the Knesset, the government, and especially the soldiers who have returned from the battlefield. “It is a law that dishonors the Knesset, the government, and especially the soldiers who have returned from the front,” he stated without hesitation.
He rejected accusations that the proposed law was designed to harm chareidim, insisting, “It has nothing to do with the chareidim. It is a law irrelevant to the reality after October 7.”
In a separate matter, Sova shared his impressions from a visit to the northern settlements, during which he witnessed the lack of progress in the region. “For almost eight years, shelters were hardly built in the north, despite a five billion shekel protection plan being presented in 2018 by Lieberman. Today we are paying the price for it,” he remarked.
He also highlighted significant health hazards, pointing to unsanitary conditions: “Rats and contaminants were found in the water pipes. Residents returning to their homes after a year and two months could not use the water.” Sova argued that the immediate priority should be returning residents to their homes as soon as possible.
Addressing security concerns, he noted the upcoming deadline for the ceasefire on January 26. “On January 26, the ceasefire phase ends, and the IDF is supposed to leave southern Lebanon according to the agreement,” he explained. “The question is how to prevent a situation where Hezbollah does not withdraw, and we find ourselves facing complications.”
