Egyptian President Anwar Sadat visited Israel in 1977, opening the door to the normalization of the relationship between Israel and its greatest rival, Egypt. The visit led to efforts for the establishment of a sustainable peace treaty between Israel and Egypt, a treaty which was eventually signed on March 26, 1979 on the White House lawn.
