Elon Musk has instructed the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) to cancel over half a million government-issued credit cards that were either idle or unnecessary, signaling the start of a broader campaign to streamline federal operations. Officials have indicated that even more cancellations are expected in the coming months.
This move is part of a larger initiative launched under President Donald Trump’s leadership to crack down on government waste and cut down excessive federal expenditures. The aim is to rein in abuse and restore accountability in how taxpayer money is handled across Washington.
As detailed by Breitbart News, DOGE has identified hundreds of thousands of government-linked credit cards across numerous federal departments that are under review and slated for deactivation as part of the efficiency overhaul.
The federal government is currently managing approximately 4.6 million “active credit cards/accounts,” which together were used for over 90 million purchases totaling $39.7 billion during the last fiscal year alone.
The General Services Administration (GSA) operates the SmartPay program, the credit card system used by federal agencies. In recent years, both the dollar amount spent through the program and the volume of individual transactions have surged, according to publicly available data.
