The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) revealed that it had terminated 113 contracts, totaling $4.7 billion, including a consulting agreement with the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) for climate change efforts in Peru.
On X, the department stated, “On [Tuesday], agencies terminated 113 wasteful contracts with a ceiling value of $4.7B and savings of $3.3B, including a $145K USDA consulting contract for ‘Peru climate change activities.’”
Additionally, DOGE announced that the Department of Labor had canceled grants worth $577 million, which resulted in savings of $237 million.
The canceled funding encompassed $10 million designated for “gender equity in the Mexican workplace,” $12.2 million for “worker empowerment in South America,” and $6.25 million for “improving respect for workers’ rights in agricultural supply chains” in Honduras, Guatemala, and El Salvador.
Also, $5 million meant to boost women’s workplace participation in West Africa was eliminated, along with $4.3 million allocated to assist foreign migrant workers in Malaysia. $3 million aimed at improving Social Security access and worker protection for migrant workers in Bangladesh was cut, as was $3 million for promoting safe and inclusive work environments in Lesotho, a nation in southern Africa.
Elon Musk leads DOGE, a temporary body established by an executive order from the White House earlier this year. President Donald Trump directed the group to improve the efficiency of the federal government, reduce spending, and streamline its operations, setting a timeline of 18 months for the task.
The department has been responsible for canceling various diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) initiatives across federal agencies, along with cutting back on consulting contracts, eliminating leases for underused federal buildings, and closing duplicate agencies and programs.
As of March 26, DOGE claims to have saved American taxpayers a total of $130 billion, equating to $807.45 per taxpayer.
Critics of DOGE argue that the organization has excessive access to federal systems and should not be empowered to terminate federal contracts or reduce funding for federal agencies.
