Thieves stole $40,000 worth of eggs from the back of a trailer in a massive heist that took place in central Pennsylvania over the weekend, Pennsylvania State Police said. A probe is underway after approximately 100,000 eggs were stolen from producers Pete & Gerry’s Organics in Greencastle.
A spokesperson for the farm, which says it’s the nation’s top producer of pasture-raised and organic, free-range eggs, said: “We are actively working with local law enforcement to investigate.”
U.S. egg prices have risen to near-record highs—the average price for a dozen eggs in the country has soared nearly 50 percent in the last year, according to data from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
Costs crept up after an avian flu outbreak that began in 2022 intensified toward the end of last year.
