New York City Mayor Eric Adams told Jewish community leaders that an individual with antisemitic views is vying for his position, according to the New York Post.
In a meeting with the Jewish Community Relations Council last week, Adams made it clear that one of the mayoral candidates has been openly expressing hatred toward Jews. He remarked that the person has been “spewing antisemitism.”
“In our great city, with a large population of Jewish residents, one of the candidates running for mayor is spewing antisemitism,” Adams said during the discussion.
While Adams did not directly name the candidate in question, it was widely assumed by those present that he was referring to State Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America.
Mamdani has been an outspoken critic of Israel. Following the October 7 massacre in 2023, he was arrested during an anti-Israel protest outside the home of Senator Chuck Schumer. Additionally, he introduced a bill called the “Not on Our Dime!: Ending New York Funding of Israeli Settler Violence Act,” which targeted organizations operating in Jewish communities in Judea and Samaria.
In recent months, Mamdani has garnered support from Linda Sarsour, a prominent anti-Israel activist.
Former New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo is also running for mayor, and both he and Adams have been vocal supporters of Israel.
