Vice President Kamala Harris is facing criticism on social media for her recent display of a new accent, which some described as reminiscent of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. While addressing voters at a predominantly black church in Philadelphia, she adopted a voice that drew comparisons to famous figures.
During her visit, she referenced a passage from Tehillim, stating, “Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the mornin’. The path may seem hard, the work may seem heavy, but joy cometh in the mornin’ and… morning is on its way,” all while speaking in an animated manner.
Her vocal delivery was likened to that of Dr. King. Some users on social media also noted similarities to former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton’s voice when she addressed a black church in Selma, Alabama, back in 2007.
This latest instance of Harris altering her accent comes shortly after an earlier event where she appeared to adopt a Hispanic accent during a town hall hosted by the Spanish-language network Univision.
At the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation’s Phoenix Awards Dinner in Washington, D.C., in September, Harris seemingly utilized a Southern accent when referring to the audience as “brothers and sisters.”
Additionally, she faced backlash for employing a fabricated Southern drawl while addressing a gathering in Detroit, Michigan, only to drop that accent when speaking to voters in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, just hours later.
