Federal authorities have revealed that they have discovered “additional criminal conduct” connected to Mayor Eric Adams, who has already pleaded not guilty to a five-count indictment accusing him of bribery, wire fraud, and corruption.
In a court submission late Monday, prosecutors from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of New York did not provide details on what this “additional criminal conduct” involves or who may be implicated. However, if these new findings are substantial, they could lead to additional charges being added to Adams’s existing indictment and possibly result in a superseding indictment being filed before his trial in April.
The current indictment claims that Adams received luxury travel perks and unlawful campaign donations from Turkish nationals in return for political favors and influence.
After Adams was charged in October, prosecutors stated that a superseding indictment was “quite likely.” Last month, Spiro wrote that the evidence the prosecutors intend to use for the superseding indictment is not authentic.
Adams commented on the latest developments on Tuesday but chose not to provide further details, instead referring reporters to his attorney, Alex Spiro.
“Even Ray Charles can see what’s going on. I have an attorney, Alex Spiro is handling that,” Adams remarked. “I think it’s clear what’s happening right now.”
In a statement to 1010 WINS, Spiro dismissed the claims, calling it “amateur hour.”
“They are just looking for a headline instead of doing the right thing,” Spiro said. “I assume we are at the point where New Yorkers are not falling for it.”
The mayor emphasized that his focus remains on running the city and staying disciplined, while allowing Spiro, a high-profile defense attorney whom he trusts, to manage the legal case.
“I trust him, you know, to be the lawyer of Jay-Z, Baldwin, Elon Musk, and all these other people,” the mayor said. “They trust him enough and I trust him enough.”
