A family in Deir al-Balah, a city in the central Gaza Strip, carried out a retaliatory killing of a Hamas police officer accused of fatally shooting one of their relatives. The incident was captured on video and has ignited widespread outrage across Gaza, coming on the heels of large-scale protests against Hamas and the reported execution of demonstrators by the group.
Hamas, the terrorist organization that governs the Gaza Strip, responded with a public statement issued in the name of “Clans and Families in Deir al-Balah,” in which it denounced what it called the “treacherous” killing of the officer. According to the statement, the officer had been “fulfilling his national duty to provide humanitarian aid and flour to civilians who are suffering the difficult circumstances in which our Palestinian people find themselves.”
Hamas claimed the shooting occurred when police officers discharged their weapons into the air to maintain order during the distribution of aid. One resident was reportedly struck by a bullet and later died from his injuries.
In its statement, Hamas urged the public to remain calm and avoid descending into further unrest. The group emphasized that those responsible for the act “will not escape punishment.”
