On Tuesday, large numbers of Palestinian Arabs gathered in northern Gaza to express their deep dissatisfaction with Hamas and demand an end to the ongoing conflict with Israel, according to The Guardian. This protest is reported to be the largest of its kind in the region since the devastating Hamas-led attack on Israel on October 7, 2023.
Social media videos from the scene depicted primarily male demonstrators assembling in Beit Lahia, shouting slogans like “Hamas out” and “Hamas terrorists.” The protest took place near the Indonesian hospital, only a few days after the Israeli Defense Forces resumed operations against Hamas following a brief ceasefire.
Some of the participants held signs that read “Stop the war” and “We want to live in peace.” The calls for the protest were said to have circulated on Telegram, urging civilians to take action. “I don’t know who organized the protest,” one attendee shared with AFP. “I took part to send a message on behalf of the people: Enough with the war,” he added, also stating that “members of the Hamas security forces in civilian clothing [were] breaking up the protest.”
Another protestor, named Majdi, shared that the suffering in Gaza had reached an unbearable level. Further footage showed demonstrators setting tires ablaze in Jabalia, chanting, “We want to eat.”
In the past, similar protests against Hamas have been forcefully suppressed by the group, which has held control over Gaza since 2007.
