The Statue of Liberty has been through a lot—buried under ice, crushed by colossal creatures, and left to rot on a world dominated by hyper-intelligent apes. But could even the worst fate imaginable for this iconic symbol be for it to be returned to France? That’s the suggestion from French MEP Raphaël Glucksmann, who has stirred up conversation by proposing that the Statue of Liberty, a gift from France to the U.S. in 1886, should be sent back due to America’s choice to align with tyrants.
Glucksmann, with a sly smile, addressed a party convention and quipped, “We’re going to say to the Americans who have chosen to side with the tyrants, to the Americans who fired researchers for demanding scientific freedom: ‘Give us back the Statue of Liberty.’”
The French politician went on to say, “We gave it to you as a gift, but apparently you despise it. So it will be just fine here at home,” as reported by local media outlets.
His remarks appear to be in response to the U.S. decision to temporarily halt aid to Ukraine, which had been instrumental in supporting the country’s defense against Russia’s invasion. Although aid has since resumed, concerns have been raised across Europe due to U.S. President Donald Trump’s perceived leniency toward Russia, his well-documented admiration for Russian President Vladimir Putin and other authoritarian figures, and his public embarrassment of Ukrainian President Voldymyr Zelenskyy.
On a more serious note, Glucksmann suggested that France could potentially gain from an influx of Americans who might lose their jobs in the wake of widespread layoffs under the new Trump administration. He remarked, “The second thing we’re going to say to the Americans is: ‘If you want to fire your best researchers, if you want to fire all the people who, through their freedom and their sense of innovation, their taste for doubt and research, have made your country the world’s leading power, then we’re going to welcome them.’”
The Statue of Liberty bears a famous plaque with the words: “Give me your tired, your poor. Your huddled masses yearning to breathe free.” Meanwhile, the Trump administration has pushed for large-scale deportations of undocumented immigrants and proposed travel restrictions on multiple countries.
