Greenland’s political leaders have strongly criticized the upcoming visits from U.S. officials, labeling them as “foreign interference” following President Donald Trump’s suggestion to buy the island. This week, Second Lady Usha Vance is scheduled to visit for a cultural trip, while a separate visit is anticipated from Trump’s National Security Adviser, Mike Waltz.
Mute Egede, the outgoing Prime Minister of Greenland, characterized the planned visits as overly aggressive. He stated that the two U.S. officials had not been invited for official talks and would be left to navigate their visits on their own, according to reports from the BBC.
The European Union has also joined in the disapproval, expressing shock and concern over Trump’s interest in acquiring Greenland. Egede verified that Waltz would accompany Vance to Greenland this week, with both expected to attend a dogsled race along with Vance’s son.
Reports from Greenlandic media indicated that the U.S. delegation might also include U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright, who has a background in mining. Speaking to the Greenlandic newspaper Sermitiaq, Egede declared that the only goal of the visit seemed to be a display of power, cautioning that the signal sent should not be misinterpreted.
Egede reiterated that Washington had been previously informed that no discussions would take place on any issues until a new Greenlandic government had been formed to handle such matters. “It should be said clearly that our integrity and democracy must be respected without foreign interference,” Egede posted on his Facebook page.
He further emphasized that the U.S. delegation’s visit “cannot be seen as just a private visit.” Following the March 11 general election, Egede now leads a caretaker government.
In January, Trump’s son, Donald Jr., also visited Greenland for a brief few hours. Greenland, the world’s largest island, is situated in the North Atlantic Ocean. While it is a part of the Kingdom of Denmark, it maintains its own significant local government.
