In the surprise attack launched by the IDF in Gaza early Tuesday morning, following the breakdown of the ceasefire due to Hamas’s refusal to release additional Israeli hostages, several high-ranking members of the terror group were reportedly killed, according to Arab media. Among those eliminated were Mohammed Abu Ubaida al-Jammasi, a member of Hamas’s political bureau; Issam al-Da’alis, another political bureau member; Yasser Harb, also part of the political bureau; Mahmoud Abu Watfah, the director of Hamas’s Ministry of Interior; Bahjat Abu Sultan, a senior figure in Hamas’s internal security apparatus; and Abu Omar al-Hata, who served as the director of Hamas’s Justice Ministry.
Issam al-Da’alis, originally from Nuseirat, was a key figure in Hamas’s leadership, holding the position of head of the Government Follow-up Committee, a role that has been likened to that of a prime minister. Recognized for his administrative and organizational skills, he played a crucial part in shaping the terror group’s overarching policies. In addition to his political influence, he was the President of the Union of UNRWA Employees in Gaza and previously worked as an assistant to Hamas political chief Ismail Haniyeh. Reports initially claimed he had been killed in July 2024, but it was later revealed that he had not been inside the targeted building at the time of the attack.
Another figure eliminated in the strike was Bahjat Abu Sultan, who was responsible for overseeing internal operations within Gaza. He was regarded as a significant player within Hamas’s structure and had been leading central operations within the Hamas Interior Ministry.
Meanwhile, Yasser Harb, another high-ranking operative taken out in the offensive, had five sons who were all fighters in Hamas’s Nukhba Force. They were killed in battle in Jabaliya during the ongoing conflict.
The IDF’s offensive, which commenced at 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday, was carried out following recommendations from military leadership. The decision to proceed was made after Israel’s hostage negotiation team concluded that Hamas was unlikely to release any captives in the near future and that the organization showed no signs of altering its position.
As combat resumed in Gaza, the IDF Spokesperson’s Unit released a statement indicating that, following an updated situational assessment, adjustments were made to the Home Front Command’s security directives as of 2:00 a.m. on Tuesday. Under these revised guidelines, communities in the immediate vicinity of the Gaza border transitioned from Full Activity status to Limited Activity. This means that educational institutions in these areas are now prohibited from operating.
