Hezbollah’s Secretary General, Naim Qassem, gave a speech on Wednesday, addressing the ongoing conflict with Israel and the status of the ceasefire.
He described Israel’s actions in southern Lebanon as deliberate attempts to harm both the Lebanese state and the international community. Qassem emphasized that the Lebanese government, in collaboration with the international committee, holds the responsibility for overseeing the ceasefire. He accused Israel of committing numerous violations, both aerial and on the ground, totaling “hundreds” of breaches.
Qassem outlined that the current phase of conflict with Israel began after the ceasefire agreement with Lebanon. He noted that this deal included a commitment from Israel to halt its aggression toward Lebanon, withdraw from Lebanese territory, and demand Hezbollah cease its defensive actions and pull back from southern Litani. He stated that the Lebanese government, which signed the agreement, is now directly accountable for ensuring its implementation.
He further stated, “The responsibility lies on the Lebanese government, the supporting countries, and the committee to diplomatically monitor the implementation of the deal so that Israel leaves Lebanon.” Qassem highlighted that Israel is continuing its violations, including attacks by air and land, destroying homes, and entering previously restricted areas. Despite these ongoing issues, Hezbollah has chosen to give the Lebanese government the opportunity to take charge of the situation, leaving the responsibility with them.
“We are being patient at this stage,” Qassem added. “We believe the government is the one bearing responsibility. We don’t want to do anything that would return us to the situation where we directly bear the responsibility.”
