Mahdi al-Mashat, the leader of the Houthi Supreme Political Council, announced that even though the group had reached an understanding with the United States to halt attacks on commercial vessels, its military campaign against Israel would press on.
According to the Houthi-run Al-Masirah news outlet, al-Mashat issued a warning to the people of Israel, urging them to “remain in shelters because their government will not be able to protect them.”
President Donald Trump confirmed on Tuesday that the Houthis had conveyed their intention to cease attacks on shipping routes. Following coordinated military actions by both the U.S. and Israel in recent days, Trump said the United States would, in turn, halt its strikes on Houthi targets.
“The Houthis have announced they don’t want to fight anymore. They just don’t want to fight, and we will honor that, and we will stop the bombings. They have capitulated. But more importantly, we will take their word. They say they will not be blowing up ships anymore,” Trump said during a meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney at the White House.
In response to a ballistic missile attack that targeted Ben Gurion Airport on Sunday, Israel has launched a series of retaliatory strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen over the past two days.
Earlier today, the Israeli Air Force hit Sana’a International Airport, located in Yemen’s capital. The airstrike leveled the facility, which had reportedly served as a key hub for weapons smuggling operations conducted by the Houthis.
The destruction of Sana’a airport came just a day after another major strike targeted Hodeidah Port. Both operations were described as direct responses to the Houthi missile attack on Ben Gurion Airport.
