Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is currently holding almost 50,000 detainees, as President Trump’s approach of deporting criminal undocumented immigrants persists. This figure surpasses the peak of 40,000 detentions seen under Joe Biden by around 10,000.
As of March 23, federal records indicate that the number of detainees stands at 47,892. This figure exceeds the 39,703 detainees during the Biden administration, though it still falls short of the 60,000 detainees recorded during Trump’s first term. However, it seems likely that this record will soon be surpassed.
These are the highest detention numbers in five years, and experts predict they may rise even further once additional funding is implemented, according to Substack user Austin Kocher.
Most of these detainees have been apprehended by ICE, as opposed to previous years when the majority were taken into custody by Customs and Border Protection (CBP).
With the increase in detainees, the strain on detention facilities has become more evident. The Miami Herald reported that activists are raising concerns about overcrowding, calling it “inhumane.”
In response, the current administration has announced the opening of new detention centers as funding becomes available.
An example of the intensified focus on detaining undocumented immigrants was observed in Minnesota, where attorneys representing migrants have noticed an uptick in immigration enforcement cases clogging the local courts. Minnesota Public Radio reported that the dockets of the seven immigration judges in Hennepin County are filled to capacity with cases.
