A senior government adviser is urging Jerusalem to impose a blanket ban on indoor gatherings of 10 or more people as a means to finally end the rapidly spreading coronavirus pandemic in Israel.
Speaking to The Times of Israel, Prof. Ran Balicer said that the “haggling game” being played by Israeli lawmakers is evaporating public trust in the government’s ability to stop the spread of the disease.
“There’s no way to explain why you’re exempting a ‘Type A’ establishment and not ‘Type B,’” he said. “It has a detrimental effect on the public’s openness to take part in this public effort.”
Balicer, an epidemiologist who runs one of Israel’s four largest public health insurers, said with the rapid rise of new cases across Israel and mounting death toll, now is the time to “change the way we manage this crisis.”
“I don’t care if it’s a gym, a shop, a workplace, or a synagogue, the virus doesn’t differentiate,” he said, noting that some restrictions could be relaxed for outdoors activities like the beach as there is less risk of infection.
