In response to the Trump administration’s decision to revoke $400 million in federal grants to Columbia University, Congressmen Jerrold Nadler (NY-12) and Adriano Espaillat (NY-13) issued a shameful joint statement condemning the move as a politically charged attack on education and scientific research, rather than a genuine effort to combat anti-Semitism.
“Revoking federal grants to Columbia University isn’t about combating anti-Semitism; it’s about the Trump administration’s war on education and science,” said Nadler, who always seems to find himself on the wrong side of issues. “If the Trump administration were as serious about anti-Semitism as they claim, they would not have filled their ranks with unapologetic antisemites.”
The $400 million in federal funding was reportedly directed toward research, including life-saving medical cures. “Slashing this funding will not protect the Jewish students Trump claims to defend but will instead undermine their academic futures,” the statement continued.
Both lawmakers said that while anti-Semitism is a serious issue, the administration’s actions were misguided and counterproductive. “Anti-Semitism is a real issue – not just a ploy to slash federal funding,” they stated. The congressmen pointed to several pieces of legislation introduced by Democrats that would effectively address the rise in anti-Semitism and protect Jewish students, including:
- Combatting Hate Across Campus (Rep. Adriano Espaillat, NY-13)
- The Resolution to Condemn the Rise in Anti-Semitism (Rep. Jerrold Nadler, NY-12)
- The HEAL Act (Rep. Josh Gottheimer, NJ-5)
- Countering Antisemitism Act (Former Rep. Kathy Manning, NC-6)
The lawmakers criticized the administration’s actions as failing to provide tangible solutions for Jewish students and sending a “chilling message” to universities nationwide. “Today’s announcement does nothing to keep Jewish students safe and sends a chilling message that universities must align with the MAGA agenda or face financial ruin,” Nadler and Espaillat concluded.
