A US judge ruled on Monday that Mahmoud Khalil, a Palestinian student at Columbia University, will not face deportation for the time being, amid US President Donald Trump’s effort to crack down on anti-Israel activists. A court hearing has been scheduled for Wednesday in this matter.
Trump stated on Monday that Khalil’s arrest, a key figure in pro-Palestinian protests at Columbia, would be the first of many similar actions to follow. “This is the first arrest of many to come. We know there are more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-terrorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activity, and the Trump Administration will not tolerate it. Many are not students. They are paid agitators. We will find, apprehend, and deport these terrorist sympathizers from our country — never to return again,” Trump remarked in a post on Truth Social.
On Sunday, the Trump administration detained Khalil, a Palestinian graduate student, who had played a significant role in last year’s pro-Palestinian demonstrations at Columbia University in New York. “On March 9, 2025, in support of President Trump’s executive orders prohibiting anti-Semitism, and in coordination with the Department of State, US Immigration and Customs Enforcement arrested Mahmoud Khalil, a former Columbia University graduate student. Khalil led activities aligned to Hamas, a designated terrorist organization,” said Department of Homeland Security spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin.
“ICE and the Department of State are committed to enforcing President Trump’s executive orders and to protecting US national security,” McLaughlin added.
Mahmoud Khalil, a student in the School of International and Public Affairs at Columbia University, was detained by US Department of Homeland Security agents at his campus residence on Saturday, according to undergraduate student Maryam Alwan and three other students who requested anonymity for fear of retaliation.
