Vice President Kamala Harris found herself in an uncomfortable moment at a rally in Michigan on Friday due to a teleprompter malfunction, which caused her to repeat certain lines several times.
Videos of the incident soon appeared on X, showing Harris as she took aim at Donald Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, criticizing their track record on job losses in the manufacturing sector. Harris referred to Trump as “one of the biggest losers of manufacturing jobs in American history.”
In the middle of her speech, Harris appeared to hesitate, then repeatedly said the phrase “32 days.” She was referencing the number of days remaining until Election Day on November 5.
“Remember this number. 32. Today we got 32 days until the election,” she stated.
After a brief pause, she continued: “So 32 days… 32 days… OK.”
“We got some business to do,” she said, trying to recover her flow, but she repeated “32 days” again as she struggled to get back on track.
“And we know we will do it,” she added, before repeating twice that the race would be “a very tight race until the very end.”
“We are the underdog, and we know we have some hard work ahead,” Harris said as she tried to push forward.
While it’s uncertain whether the repetition was caused by the teleprompter or was a verbal misstep, critics wasted no time in jumping on the moment, speculating that the teleprompter was the problem.
“Kamala’s teleprompter briefly went out at the beginning of her speech—you can tell the exact moment it happened. She had absolutely no idea what to do or say. Humiliating,” posted the Trump War Room account on X.
“OMG: Kamala really can’t speak without a teleprompter! You can see the EXACT moment it malfunctions. She can’t speak without a script! This is HUMILIATING for her!” another person wrote.
Trump has frequently boasted that he doesn’t rely on teleprompters. “Isn’t it nice, by the way, to have a president who doesn’t need a teleprompter?” he asked his supporters at a Michigan rally on Thursday.
At one point during his speech, while allegedly speaking with two teleprompters in front of him, Trump remarked: “The teleprompter just went out!”
He added that only a “certain type of person” can manage to keep speaking when a teleprompter fails.
“Usually, I don’t talk about it,” Trump said. “Oh, we’ve lost a teleprompter many times. The worst is the wind.
“I was in Ohio for Bernie Moreno, and it was 45-mile-an-hour winds. These things were blowing like flags. You felt like a drunken sailor in all due respect.”
