On Monday, former Vice President Kamala Harris expressed her joy over the release of Edan Alexander, a dual U.S.-Israeli national who had been held captive by Hamas.
In a message shared on X, Harris emphasized the ongoing need to secure the freedom of all remaining hostages.
“After 584 days in Hamas captivity, American citizen Edan Alexander is finally reunited with his family. From my meetings with the Alexander family, I have long admired their strength and courage, and Doug and I join all Edan’s loved ones in celebrating his safe return,” she wrote.
She continued by urging the global community to remain vigilant and active in the push for further releases. “The work to bring home the remaining hostages must continue. The international community cannot rest until all the hostages are home,” added Harris.
Alexander was captured by Hamas on October 7, 2023, while serving in the Israel Defense Forces, and until his release, he had been the final living American still held by the terror group.
His freedom was secured through direct talks between the United States and Hamas, without the involvement of Israeli officials.
President Donald Trump weighed in on the development Sunday evening, calling the release “a step taken in good faith towards the United States and the efforts of the mediators — Qatar and Egypt — to put an end to this very brutal war and return ALL living hostages and remains to their loved ones.”
He went on to say, “Hopefully this is the first of those final steps necessary to end this brutal conflict. I look very much forward to that day of celebration!”
