Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, has announced that a newly tested hypersonic missile system will strengthen the country’s defense capabilities against its Pacific adversaries, according to reports from state media. This missile test coincided with a visit to the region by the top U.S. diplomat, Secretary of State Antony Blinken, and comes just two weeks before the inauguration of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, who had previously attempted to engage with North Korea.
“The hypersonic missile system will reliably contain any rivals in the Pacific region that can affect the security of our state,” Kim, who supervised the missile’s launch, stated in remarks covered by KCNA.
KCNA also highlighted the use of a “new compound of carbon fiber” in the missile’s engine, which experts suggest could enable North Korea to target further distances, utilizing technology currently only possessed by the United States, Russia, and China.
Additionally, the missile’s launch incorporated a “new comprehensive and effective method” for its flight and guidance control system, according to KCNA’s report.
