Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beytenu party, has sharply criticized the government’s decision to remove Shin Bet chief Ronen Bar, particularly during a time of conflict with all Israel’s adversaries. He claims that Prime Minister Netanyahu is making a grave mistake by engaging in a battle against Bar, a move that plays into the hands of Israel’s enemies.
“The prime minister of October 7 [Bibi Netanyahu] is doing exactly what our enemies dream of — fighting the Shin Bet head,” Lieberman asserts. He further argues that Netanyahu should have taken accountability for the failure of that day, resigning immediately and demanding that everyone responsible for the catastrophe do the same.
Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition, also weighed in, accusing the government of firing Bar for a singular, ulterior motive: to halt the investigation into Qatargate.
“The government is dismissing Bar for one reason alone: To stop the Qatargate investigation,” Lapid contends. He adds that opposition parties are uniting to challenge this dangerous move, which he claims is designed to cover up the influence of a foreign adversary on the prime minister’s office. “Opposition parties will together appeal this reckless step that is meant to whitewash a hostile state’s penetration into the prime minister’s office,” Lapid charges.
