A man who was accused of shooting an Orthodox Jewish man near a synagogue in Chicago’s West Rogers Park neighborhood over a month ago was found dead in Cook County Jail, authorities reported on Sunday, according to Fox 32 Chicago.
Sidi Mohamed Abdallahi, 22, died by suicide after hanging himself in his cell, the Cook County Sheriff’s Office confirmed.
Abdallahi’s body was found during a routine security check at 3:30 p.m. on Shabbos.
Jail personnel attempted to perform life-saving procedures, and Abdallahi was taken to Mt. Sinai Hospital, where he was later declared dead. Authorities confirmed that there were no signs of foul play.
The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office is conducting an autopsy to determine the cause and manner of death.
Abdallahi, who was reportedly an undocumented immigrant from Mauritania and had previously been apprehended and released by the US Border Patrol in San Diego, faced multiple charges. These included six counts of attempted first-degree murder, seven counts of aggravated discharge of a firearm, and a charge of aggravated battery.
Later, Chicago Police announced that charges of felony terrorism and a hate crime were also added to Abdallahi’s case.
Abdallahi was accused of shooting at a 39-year-old man on the North Side of Chicago before turning his gun on responding officers and paramedics, firing multiple rounds from various positions. Police returned fire, striking the shooter.
The victim was shot in the shoulder, treated at a hospital, and later released.
