Dear Matzav Inbox,
I am writing to express my frustration with the ongoing disparity between cholov Yisroel and cholov stam products, particularly when it comes to basic dairy items like sour cream, yogurt, and butter.
Take, for example, Friendship’s OU-D sour cream, which is priced at $2.49 for a 16 oz pint. In contrast, a cholov Yisroel sour cream is often priced around $4.99 for a pint. The kicker is that the ingredients in the Friendship sour cream are simple: cultured cream, and that’s it. However, the cholov Yisroel versions are often filled with a list of unnecessary additives, including Modified Food Starch, Calcium Sulfate, Locust Bean Gum, Carrageenan, and Enzyme.
This pattern repeats across many other dairy products, from yogurt to cottage cheese, cream cheese, and butter. It’s clear that the cholov Yisroel alternatives are not only more expensive, but they also contain inferior ingredients, making the consumer pay twice as much for a product that is, quite frankly, worse for their health.
It is deeply troubling that frum consumers are being sold an inferior product at an inflated price. It is shameful and reflects poorly on the market and the lack of competition. Perhaps it is time for consumers to become more educated or for Rabbanim to take a stronger stance on this issue.
We deserve better, and it is high time something is done about it.
