Mike Johnson has been chosen as the Speaker of the House for the 119th Congress after two Republican representatives switched their votes right before the second round of voting was about to start.
Initially, Reps. Ralph Norman from South Carolina and Keith Self from Texas had supported other candidates, but they ultimately decided to back Johnson, which helped him edge closer to the necessary votes.
The Louisiana congressman, who was just two votes away from securing the speakership, benefited from these last-minute changes.
With 434 members present, Johnson needed 218 votes to officially take on the role of Speaker of the House.
