Defense Minister Yisroel Katz has made the decision to bar former Defense Minister and IDF Chief of Staff Moshe (Bogie) Ya’alon from attending events at Israel Defense Forces (IDF) bases. This action follows a formal request submitted by Itzik Bonzel, the father of Sergeant Amit, in cooperation with the Im Tirtzu organization. In their letter, the petitioners voiced strong opposition to Ya’alon’s involvement in military functions.
The petition specifically referenced multiple inflammatory remarks made by Ya’alon, including his accusation that IDF soldiers were committing ethnic cleansing in Gaza, his description of the conflict as “useless,” and his comments suggesting that he wished “Israel would not send soldiers to murder infants in Gaza.” The petition also pointed to a separate remark where Ya’alon stated, “If those responsible for the law have enacted illegal laws, it is our duty not to comply.” These statements, the petitioners argued, had been widely quoted by Israel’s enemies and had fueled antisemitic sentiment.
The petitioners went on to argue that it was inappropriate to invite Ya’alon to speak at a military event, noting that the base in question is a government-operated military facility overseen by the Ministry of Defense, and not a private venue. They urged Minister Katz to block Ya’alon from attending the event, citing the serious nature of the allegations against him.
In light of these concerns, Minister Katz has agreed to honor the request and officially banned Ya’alon from participating in any official events held at IDF bases.
